Salzburg and Paracelsus Medizinische Privatuniversität, Salzburg/Austria Mission: The symposium will discuss all aspects of both the blood-brain as well as the blood-CSF barrier with attention to signal transduction and its influence on structure and function of these barriers. Recent findings will be presented concerning transport- and receptor-mediated processes, differentation of the brain endothelium, posttranslational modifications or molecular characteristics of relevant proteins. Mediators of regulatory pathways will include reactive species, peptides, neurotransmitters, small molecules and others. In vivo and in vitro aspects will be covered, and an attempt will be made to bridge the gap between molecular and systemic aspects. Barrier disturbances will be considered, such as ischaemia/hypoxia, tumors, degenerative processses or inflammation, and pharmacological approaches will be introduced in experimental and clinical studies. By presenting
new and unpublished work, the symposium will help to improve our knowledge
on the control and function of the BBBs. Venue: The symposium
will be held in the beautiful landscape park Sanssouci and in the
neighbourhood of the majestic castles of the Prussian Kings and German
Emperors. This environment affords an inspiring atmosphere for the
intensive scientific exchange traditionally experienced at this meeting
series in the Berlin region or in various European countries.
